....or we can get with the Egrets...
We can choose to focus on problems … or you can get with the Egrets …
A photographer walking past me this morning as I searched for an appropriate place to capture sunrise commented that there wouldn’t be much of a sunrise today. I replied that it would be good and he began to tell me why it wouldn’t.
As I ventured out onto the wharf another photographer had already packed up and was leaving after possibly deciding it wasn’t worth it. But I was ready to go.
I was pleased with the reflections across the still water I didn’t expect to get and returned, happy knowing I had something to offer for today. I thought again of the man with the tripod who was convinced there wouldn’t be much wondering if he’d stayed or given up and gone home.
Then I saw the pictures my partner had taken. He’d found a place where the egrets and other sea birds were, busily feasting on food flowing out of the water outlet as the dawn began to break.
These birds weren’t thinking it’s not going to be much good, they expected only the best as they foraged for food, taking time to stop and enjoy the view as the sun began to appear and in return were rewarded for their efforts.
And when we position ourselves regardless of the way things look like my partner did in the water outlet, we set ourselves up for success and I was pleasantly surprised at the beauty that came from this ‘seemingly ordinary’ start to the day.
I was reminded that what we focus on determines what we get in life.
The Bible, the absolutely trustworthy Word of God says:
You’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious – the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse.
Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies. Philippians 4:8-9 MSG
