If I could turn back time..

I have very fond memories growing up in Australia, a peaceful safe environment, where children came home when the street lights came on, where people could walk at night without fear, where doors were never locked, where all the neighbours gathered together for a bonfire and crackers or a party in the street to celebrate the new year.

Violence and death occurred daily in other countries but rarely in our own. Now I wish I could turn back time.

Recently in my little corner of the world a man was convicted of throwing his fiancee off the 15th story of their building because his abuse was too much for her to bare and she’d decided to leave.

Also as we sat quietly enjoying a meal, in the next booth a lady began to share with her friends about the abuse she’d experienced at the hands of her husband. She sat facing us so we heard what she was saying clearly. As we ate my heart sank as she described her life with a man she didn’t want to marry but had been encouraged by her father to marry him because ‘she was overweight and no-one else would marry her’ even though the abuse had already begun.

Eventually she got the courage to break free but this attractive lady now in her late ’60s who is by no means overweight is scarred from years of sexual abuse by this man who was convinced she was having affairs and regularly restrained her, threatening to take her life if she left.

News reports of murder/suicides are becoming commonplace when people can see no way out.

Some suggest we should will ourselves into a lovely place, because we all have God inside us but there’s only one who can take this kind of pain away and His name is Jesus.

This beautiful song from Casting Crowns says it well – if we ever needed you Lord its now.

Evil has dominated way too long and people see no solution. Satan will continue his rampage until the whole world hears that Jesus is the only way out for the Bible says:

And the Good News about the Kingdom will be preached throughout the whole world, so that all nations will hear it; and then, finally, THE END WILL COME. Matthew 24:14

Jesus paid the price when He died on a cross for this world. He made the way to bring salvation to those who are lost and we as christians must play our part in helping to turn someone’s life around. I don’t know why but He gave this task to us but He did:

Then Jesus said to them, "So wherever you go in the world, tell everyone the Good News.Whoever believes and is baptised will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. Mark 16:15-16 GW

What the Lord needs is for us who already experience His love to rise up and share His love with our world. We are His hands and feet.

I used to cringe when I heard this kind of teaching because I couldn’t see myself standing on a soap box in the middle of the city and preaching to all who passed by.

But I’ve learned that God doesn’t asks to do anything He hasn’t already equipped us to do. He does however ask us to step onto the path He has for us, where ever it leads so that those close bye will see what we experienced, that God can fill the emptiness inside and bring abundantly new life!

Revelation 3:20 is often misquoted to explain how God knocks at the door of our heart but these words are actually written to His Church:

Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me. To him who overcomes, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I overcame and sat down with my Father on his throne. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches." Revelation 3:20-22

The quicker we get this job done, the quicker this present darkness will be over and sadness, loneliness, fear, oppression, addiction, and all other domination, depravity, death and desperation will cease!

What happens when we live God’s way? He brings gifts into our lives, much the same way that fruit appears in an orchard – things like affection for others, exuberance about life, serenity.

We develop a willingness to stick with things, a sense of compassion in the heart, and a conviction that a basic holiness permeates things and people. We find ourselves involved in loyal commitments, not needing to force our way in life, able to marshal and direct our energies wisely.

Legalism is helpless in bringing this about; it only gets in the way. Galatians 5:22-23
Matthew 21:18-22
