Socially Distant, Yet Never Alone

This beach where I stood my feet this morning is now closed as we self isolate in a bid to prevent prevent further spreading of this Coronavirus-19 pandemic sweeping the world right now.

You can learn a lot about nature as you stop and quietly watch.
As I waited for the sun to emerge from the horizon this morning a lone seagull stood preening at the waters’ edge. This bird’s preening continued until a large wave began rolling in and its demeanour changed from preening to searching for tiny morsels of food washed up in the wave. It’s clear that this bird knew if it just waited long enough, a gastronomic feast would be served.

At first I was amused by his ‘social distancing’ as he stood there by himself. As my thoughts drifted further I wondered if he felt alone as he stood there, possibly an outcast from other birds around him. Then I thought of so many alone in their rooms right now, shut away from the world while we wait for this Coronavirus pandemic to dissipate.

The seagull’s behaviour reminded of a Bible verse that says:
Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

When my sunrise capturing was done I returned home to our place of rest. As we sat in comfort on our verandah, my eyes exploring our lofty view, I am still amazed at this place where God has placed our feet to wander. While taking in our uninterrupted Pacific Ocean to the Gold Coast Hinterland views, I marvel at how fortunate we are.

Of all people enduring self-isolation right now we are particularly blessed, but moving to live here was never our plan, it was God who orchestrated this move. Had I not listened to Him when He told me to ‘Go and look at those units’, the ones we now call home, while we were passing through Queensland after circumnavigating Australia in 2018, we would have missed this amazing opportunity!

Right now, we are all bombarded with ‘what if’s’ birthed by this present health threat prompted by fear of the unknown. Fear of what may come tomorrow as life as we know it changes, but this seagull alone on the beach bears witness to the truth that we don’t need to worry about tomorrow when we put our trust in the one true God, the who made us.

Just like that seagull knew his needs would be supplied and just like we knew God was speaking to us when He told us to move interstate, He wants to speak to you.

God is always speaking to those who will listen. What is He saying to you today? As I quietly watched this seagull this morning, if you get alone and ask God what He wants to tell you, you’ll know His love for you.

Janny Grein is in heaven now but listen as she sings this song I also used to sing in the ’70s
~ Call Upon Him [HQ] Anthology Collection

Here are the lyrics to her song:
Listen children carefully
Listen that you might live
A man called Jesus wants to meet you
He has a life He wants to give you
You really ought to know my Jesus
You’re no stranger to Him
He has taken care of you
Long before your life began

Chorus
Call upon Him while He’s near
Now’s the time He may be found
He will hear and by His Word
He will turn your life around.

His peace will lead you into joy
A greater joy than you have known
Blessed is the man who knows
And claims this Jesus for his own
Now He is waiting patiently,
Waiting for you to call
Call Him Master
Call Him Lord
He is here to serve us all

Lastly, Jesus explains:
I am the Gateway. To enter through me is to experience life, freedom, and satisfaction. A thief has only one thing in mind—he wants to steal, slaughter, and destroy. But I have come to give you everything in abundance, more than you expect—life in its fullness until you overflow! John 10:9-10
