Who Is God?

The best way to find out is to hear what others who know Him have to say…

KING DAVID, one of the most important figures in Jewish history, born in 907 BC he reigned as king of Israel for 40 years had much to say about the greatness of God, including this:

Sing praises to the Lord! Raise your voice in song to him who rides upon the clouds!
Jehovah is his name—oh, rejoice in his presence.
He is a father to the fatherless; he gives justice to the widows, for he is holy. He gives families to the lonely, and releases prisoners from jail, singing with joy! Psalm 68:4-6

Luke recorded these words from MARY who gave birth to Jesus said this about Him:

“Oh, how I praise the Lord. How I rejoice in God my Saviour!
For he, the mighty Holy One, has done great things to me.

I’m bursting with God-news;
I’m dancing the song of my Saviour God.
God took one good look at me, and look what happened—
I’m the most fortunate woman on earth!

What God has done for me will never be forgotten,
the God whose very name is holy, set apart from all others.

His mercy flows in wave after wave
on those who are in awe before him.

He bared his arm and showed his strength,
scattered the bluffing braggarts.

He knocked tyrants off their high horses,
pulled victims out of the mud.

The starving poor sat down to a banquet;
the callous rich were left out in the cold.

He embraced his chosen child, Israel;
he remembered and piled on the mercies, piled them high.
It’s exactly what he promised,
beginning with Abraham and right up to now.
Luke 1:46-47, 49 MSG

LUKE, one of His disciples who walked with Jesus and knew Him intimately said this:

His mercy goes on from generation to generation, to all who reverence him. Luke 1:50

Then there are modern day accounts from people who, although they have never seen God have a personal experience with Him, people like N T Wright who is quoted to have said:

If you want to know who God is, look at Jesus.
If you want to know what it means to be human, look at Jesus.
If you want to know what love is, look at Jesus.
If you want to know what grief is, look at Jesus. And keep on looking… until you’re not just a spectator, and you’re actually part of the drama which has him as the central character.

I love that! And I can personally testify to a life long commitment to and relationship with Jesus who has never let me down, so much so that I’m in the process of writing a book about how God has led me all the way!

O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. You know when I sit or stand. When far away you know my every thought. You chart the path ahead of me and tell me where to stop and rest. Every moment you know where I am. You know what I am going to say before I even say it. You both precede and follow me and place your hand of blessing on my head.

This is too glorious, too wonderful to believe! I can never be lost to your Spirit! I can never get away from my God! If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the place of the dead, you are there. If I ride the morning winds to the farthest oceans, even there your hand will guide me, your strength will support me. If I try to hide in the darkness, the night becomes light around me. For even darkness cannot hide from God; to you the night shines as bright as day. Darkness and light are both alike to you.

You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit them together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! It is amazing to think about. Your workmanship is marvellous—and how well I know it. You were there while I was being formed in utter seclusion! You saw me before I was born and scheduled each day of my life before I began to breathe. Every day was recorded in your book!

How precious it is, Lord, to realise that you are thinking about me constantly! I can’t even count how many times a day your thoughts turn toward me. And when I waken in the morning, you are still thinking of me!

Surely you will slay the wicked, Lord! Away, bloodthirsty men! Begone! They blaspheme your name and stand in arrogance against you—how silly can they be? O Lord, shouldn’t I hate those who hate you? Shouldn’t I be grieved with them? Yes, I hate them, for your enemies are my enemies too.

Search me, O God, and know my heart; test my thoughts. Point out anything you find in me that makes you sad, and lead me along the path of everlasting life. Psalm 139

This is what He says about himself:
I will never leave you or forsake you…
If you seek me with all your heart you will find me…
Come to me all who are weary and I will give you rest…
I came so that the world could be saved…
And I wait for you to come to me…

“I’m telling you, once and for all, that unless you return to square one and start over like children, you’re not even going to get a look at the kingdom, let alone get in. Whoever becomes simple and elemental again, like this child, will rank high in God’s kingdom. What’s more, when you receive the childlike on my account, it’s the same as receiving me. Matthew 18:3
