This Gift Called Life.

Do you think of life as a gift or a trial? Do you wish you were someone of something else?

While standing in a farmers field at daybreak one cool autumn morning waiting for dawn to break. I was soon surrounded by cows waking from their slumber.

When they saw I had nothing to feed them they headed off together to once again spend their day eating grass to make milk for our nourishment, with full acceptance of their mundane but very useful existence. This got me thinking about my life.

Today I hear clucking chickens in the chook pen of the back yard next door, proudly announcing to their owners that they have laid another egg. They know nothing more than to lay eggs day after day for life. That’s as good as it gets for a chicken. Imagine life like that.

I’ve watched at dawn some mornings as small fish leap from the water to safety from being eaten, only to be caught by hungry seagulls hovering overhead. What if we lived as a small fish trapped in the lake after waves close off our only escape to the ocean and living in fear of being eaten by larger fish or eagles that circle overhead all day every day! If by some fortune these fish escape, they are still in danger of being caught on a fisherman’s line in their quest to find something to eat. I’m so thankful I didn’t live life as a fish because of all creation, only the fittest survive!

With us it’s different! Unlike other creatures, we’ve been blessed with the ability to reason, to decide what’s best for us and how we want to live. What we say, what we do, what we believe, what we eat, who we want to be friends with are all our choice. Our free will is worth celebrating!

Some are unable to live in freedom. If freedom is ours to enjoy, God says this to us:
“Everyone to whom much has been given, much will be required; and to whom they entrusted much, of him they will ask all the more.” Luke 12:48 Amplified Bible

Living in a free country means that living a mundane purposless existence is not our fete unless we choose it. We choose our destiny, limited only by what we understand of what past experience has taught us and by what we believe about ourselves, but like spilled wine leaves us in a mess to clean up, when we make bad choices we must also live with the consequences our choice brings.

So how do we avoid making a life-altering mistake?
Why were we given a free will? We were made in the image of God:

God spoke: “Let us make human beings in our image, make them
reflecting our nature
So they can be responsible for the fish in the sea,
the birds in the air, the cattle,
And, yes, Earth itself,
and every animal that moves on the face of Earth.”
God created human beings;
he created them godlike,
Reflecting God’s nature.
He created them male and female.
God blessed them:
“Prosper! Reproduce! Fill Earth! Take charge!
Be responsible for fish in the sea and birds in the air,
for every living thing that moves on the face of Earth.” Genesis 1:27

A sceptic will scoff that a God of the Universe created everything including us. That He gave us control of our destiny although He knew we would make wrong choices, then He sent His Son Jesus to earth to die for us so we could have undeserved forgiveness for our mistakes is very hard to believe, but God wants us to accept who He is. He has given us a mind of reason, but it isn’t for us to reason against Him.

“Learn this well: Unless you dramatically change your way of thinking and become teachable, and learn about heaven’s kingdom realm with the wide-eyed wonder of a child, you will never be able to enter in. Matthew 18:3

To a scepic of God’s reality, i.e. someone who lives on an entirely human level, rejecting the revelations of God’s Spirit for they make no sense to him… God says this:

He can’t understand the revelations of the Spirit because they are only discovered by the illumination of the Spirit. Those who live in the Spirit are able to carefully evaluate all things, and they are subject to the scrutiny of no one but God, for who has ever intimately known the mind of the Lord Yahweh well enough to become his counsellor? 1 Corinthians 2:14 -16 TPT

Many take alternate paths whie trying to coerce you to join them. All they want is easy street. They hate Christ’s Cross. But easy street is a dead-end street. Those who live there make their bellies their gods; all they can think of is their appetites. Philippians 3:18-21

But for a Christian i.e. one who chooses to make Jesus their Lord, life has far more to offer.

We’re citizens of high heaven! We await the arrival of the Saviour, the Master, Jesus Christ, who will transform our earthy bodies into glorious bodies like his own. He’ll make us beautiful and whole with the same powerful skill by which he is putting everything as it should be, under and around him.

This is why the Scriptures say:

Things never discovered or heard of before,
things beyond our ability to imagine —
these are the many things God has in store for all his lovers. 1 Corinthians 2:9-10 TPT

For one who accepts Him as He is and chooses to follow Jesus, there’s far more of life than we can see right now. We’re citizens of high heaven! We await the arrival of the Saviour, the Master, Jesus Christ, who will transform our earthy bodies into glorious bodies like his own. He’ll make us beautiful and whole with the same powerful skill by which he is putting everything as it should be, under and around him.

The True Power of the Cross
To preach the message of the cross seems like sheer nonsense to those who are on their way to destruction, but to us who are on our way to salvation, it is the mighty power of God released within us. 1 Corinthians 1:18 TPT

Spirit can be known only by spirit—God’s Spirit and our spirits in open communion. Spiritually alive, we have access to everything God’s Spirit is doing, and can’t be judged by unspiritual critics. Isaiah’s question, “Is there anyone around who knows God’s Spirit, anyone who knows what he is doing?” has been answered: Christ knows, and we have Christ’s Spirit. 1 Corinthians 1:25 MSG

“What profit is the carved image when its maker has formed it? It is only a cast image and a teacher of lies. For its maker trusts in his own creation [as his god] When he makes speechless idols.
“Judgment is coming to him who says to the wooden image, ‘Awake!’
And to the speechless stone, ‘Arise!’

… And that is your teacher? Look, it is overlaid with gold and silver, And there is no breath at all inside it. Habakkuk 2:18-19

So do not defile yourselves by trying to make a statue of God—an idol in any form, whether of a man, woman, animal, bird, a small animal that runs along the ground, or a fish. And do not look up into the sky to worship the sun, moon, or stars. Deuteronomy 4:16-19

You can be sure of this: The Kingdom of Christ and of God will never belong to anyone who is impure or greedy, for a greedy person is really an idol worshiper. Ephesians 5:5

The Lord is my light and my salvation; he protects me from danger—whom shall I fear?
Yes, though a mighty army marches against me, my heart shall know no fear! I am confident that God will save me. Psalm 27:1-6
