If God exists, why do babies starve?

Every few seconds a child dies from hunger. So, I can’t believe in God when I see things like that….

I found this message in my in box this morning so as I headed out to capture sunrise I prayed that God would show me how to reply to such an important comment.

As the sun began to ascend through clouds on the horizon, I noticed two birds resting on a rock. Then one turned its head revealing fishing line dangling from its body.

I contemplated how I could free it from the prison it found itself in, although to capture and rescue a wild bird on my own would be impossible.

…….but is it God’s fault this little bird has to spend the rest of its life with a painful hook attached?

So why do some people live with more than enough while many others live in poverty – is starvation a part of God’s plan?

The Bible says:
- Then God looked over all he had made and he saw that it was excellent in every way. Genesis 1:31

- And God created people in his own image; God patterned them after himself; male and female he created them. God blessed them and told them, “Multiply and fill the earth and subdue it. Be masters over the fish and birds and all the animals.” Genesis 1:27-28

God, the creator of the Universe says:
- Look at the birds. They don’t need to plant or harvest or put food in barns because your heavenly Father feeds them. You are far more valuable to him than they are…

- Look at the lilies and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. Matthew 6:28-29

And if God cares so wonderfully for flowers that are here today and gone tomorrow, won’t he more surely care for you? Matthew 6:30

Surely a more appropriate thought would be why did God put self seeking humanity in charge of his perfect and awesome world?

The freedom God gave us means it’s our choice to love, be kind, etc. and in order to choose to love, we must also be able to choose not to love. This freedom of choice gave birth to evil because man’s freedom means he can also make bad choices.

The Bible says:
You will always reap what you sow! Those who live only to satisfy their own sinful desires will harvest the consequences of decay and death. But those who live to please God’s Spirit will harvest everlasting life. Galatians 6:7-8

God’s plan is that we have all we need … so do dying babies suffer because they’re reaping what they sowed? No, but just like this wounded seagull, they suffer the ripple effect from bad choices made by others.

So why doesn’t God take back control so we can live in a perfect world?

One day He promises to, the Bible says:
The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent.

Right now he’s offering us the ultimate choice. Would you prefer to live under God as a dictator taking away your freedom or would you like the freedom to make your own choices, good and bad?

The great news is that God is as close as a prayer away and will lead you into the perfect life He prepared for you before you took your first breath – it’s your choice we accept or reject His perfect plan for you!
