Come Heckle Christ?
But Joshua J Ladgrove how much are you sacrificing for the sake of a quick laugh?
I heard this week about a comedy show encouraging people to mock Christ but to mock the King of Kings brings with it eternal consequences and this is no laughing matter.
Allowing a show that mocks the God of the Universe to get a quick laugh indicates how far we’ve sunk into the satanic darkness – our beautiful world is fast becoming a place no-one will be happy in.
Here’s how they promoted this show entitled ‘Come Heckle Jesus’:
Have you ever wanted to heckle Jesus Christ? Maybe just ask him a little question? Throw something at his head? Well now’s your chance.
From last year’s Best Comedy winner comes a brand new, one night only, improvised performance where you, under the watchful eyes of God, get to heckle Jesus Christ. In the show Come Heckle Christ, Melbourne comedian Joshua J Ladgrove dresses as Jesus and asks audience members to jeer in his direction, ask a question or throw something at his head.
Promoted as the perfect show for:
-Anyone who wears a WWJD (What would Jesus do) wristband
-Disgruntled former Christians
-Those easily offended
-Priests (and by extension sexual deviants)
-Altar girls and boys
-Atheists
-Anyone who enjoys yelling at Jesus whilst watching a dramatic re-enactment of everyone’s favourite fairy-tale: The Crucifixion of Jesus The Christ
And the Critics responded:
“This was the most memorable and daring performance I’ve seen at any Fringe: it was truly sacrilicious.” – Heckler, 2013 Melb Fringe
Genius’ – Yawpmag, 2013 MICF
‘You need to see it’ 5 stars – Funny Tonne, 2013 MICF
“A simple idea, bravely and brilliantly executed.” – Crikey!
And in a further attempt to be funny they added – Warning: Jesus! Did this warning mean, Watch out Jesus is in the house? Or did they think they would need to warn Jesus that He was about to get jeered? To suspect Jesus would need to be warned about anything seems to be the thing that’s most amusing’.
A Journo also commented ‘imagine if this show was called ’Come Heckle Mohamed’ ? Worth pondering on eh? Australia we need to stand up for Jesus!
Archbishop Philip Wilson sent a letter to Mr Weatherill, asking him to intervene. He also sent a letter to SA parishes outlining his concerns. "While I am a strong advocate for freedom of speech and supporter of the arts, I believe this production is extremely offensive to people of any religious persuasion and insulting to many. Archbishop Wilson wrote.
But there’s nothing new under the sun! God knew this was coming, that’s why He wrote this warning:
Ignoring God Leads to a Downward Spiral.
God’s angry displeasure erupts as acts of human mistrust and wrongdoing and lying accumulate, as people try to put a shroud over truth. But the basic reality of God is plain enough. Open your eyes and there it is!
By taking a long and thoughtful look at what God has created, people have always been able to see what their eyes as such can’t see: eternal power, for instance, and the mystery of his divine being. So nobody has a good excuse.
What happened was this: People knew God perfectly well, but when they didn’t treat him like God, refusing to worship him, they trivialized themselves into silliness and confusion so that there was neither sense nor direction left in their lives.
They pretended to know it all, but were illiterate regarding life.
They traded the glory of God who holds the whole world in his hands for cheap figurines you can buy at any roadside stand.
So God said, in effect, “If that’s what you want, that’s what you get.” It wasn’t long before they were living in a pigpen, smeared with filth, filthy inside and out. And all this because they traded the true God for a fake god, and worshiped the god they made instead of the God who made them – the God we bless, the God who blesses us.
Worse followed.
Refusing to know God, they soon didn’t know how to be human either – women didn’t know how to be women, men didn’t know how to be men. Sexually confused, they abused and defiled one another, women with women, men with men – all lust, no love.
And then they paid for it, oh, how they paid for it – emptied of God and love, godless and loveless wretches.
Since they didn’t bother to acknowledge God, God quit bothering them and let them run loose. And then all hell broke loose: rampant evil, grabbing and grasping, vicious backstabbing. They made life hell on earth with their envy, wanton killing, bickering, and cheating. Look at them: mean-spirited, venomous, fork-tongued God-bashers. Bullies, swaggerers, insufferable windbags! They keep inventing new ways of wrecking lives. They ditch their parents when they get in the way.
Stupid, slimy, cruel, cold-blooded.And it’s not as if they don’t know better. They know perfectly well they’re spitting in God’s face. And they don’t care – worse, they hand out prizes to those who do the worst things best! Romans 1:17-32
And this well describes our world right now?
But just like Jesus died for the rest of humanity, He also died for the Joshua’s of this world pictured and those who have no concern for this behaviour. If you’re a christian, pray for Joshua and the others so they are confronted with the real Jesus, then they can make an ‘educated’ decision about whether or not they want to spend eternity without Christ.
Now here’s a warning from Jesus!
Whether we choose to believe it or not … if we haven’t accepted His offer of forgiveness, we will all explain our actions to Him:
For the LORD is coming! He is coming to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness and all the nations with his truth. Psalms 96:11-13 NIV
