How to talk to God

The Bible has the answer for everything, it even contains the formula for communicating with God. We can practice God’s presence by acknowledging Him, praising Him and making requests to Him throughout each day.

1. You don’t have to be alone to spend time talking to God. Like we carry a mobile phone with us every day to have conversations with others, we can have a conversation with God any time, no matter what we’re doing.

2. You don’t have to change your daily routine to worship God. It’s easy to worship and speak with him when you’re driving, exercising, working, waiting for the bus. Nowhere is closer to God than where you are right now – wherever that is.

3. You don’t have to know people to pray for them. If God puts someone on your heart via the news on TV, in a crowded place, or crossing the street in front of you, if you notice somebody who you sense has a need, if you’re curious about them or you have compassion for them, you can pray for them. If someone comes to mind and you’re not even with them distance is no barrier in prayer – just aim and fire your prayer towards them.

4. You don’t have to talk loud to get God’s attention. God hears whispers of the heart – they’re just as effective as a loud prayer. Speaking out loud is the best way if it won’t draw attention to yourself because you can hear you’re prayer and it engages you, but God also hears silent prayer. In the Bible God says:

When you pray, don’t be like the hypocrites who love to pray publicly on street corners and in the synagogues where everyone can see them. I assure you, that is all the reward they will ever get. But when you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you and pray to your Father secretly. Then your Father, who knows all secrets, will reward you. Matthew 6:5-6

5. You don’t have to speak eloquently to get God’s attention. Old fashioned King James prayers can sometimes be a hindrance, making others think they’re not good enough to pray.

6. You don’t have to talk a long time for God to know that something’s important to you. Sometimes one line conversations are exactly what’s needed. ‘God help’ is completely effective! Choose a brief sentence – speak to the mountain. God also says:

When you pray, don’t babble on and on as people of other religions do. They think their prayers are answered only by repeating their words again and again. Don’t be like them because your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask him! Matthew 6:7-8

7. We don’t have to deserve an answer to prayer to receive one. If we examine our own failures we may not ever ask God to prosper or help us. If God only gave us today what we deserve, there would be no salvation. We didn’t deserve to be saved from our sin but its the unmerited favour of God, it’s by His favour that we didn’t earn that we receive our salvation and He hears us when ask.

So get bold and ask – Jesus says ask and you will receive. Nothing there about deserving it. Talk to God 24/7 because prayer changes things!

With a God like this loving you, you can pray very simply. Like this: Our Father in heaven, Reveal who you are. Set the world right; Do what’s best – as above, so below. Matthew 6:9-10 (The Message)

Why pray? Because God can do far more in a second than we can do in a lifetime.
