Desert dreaming

Back on the highway this afternoon the countryside looked beautiful, with an obvious mirage on the horizon. At one place I could see water pools on both sides of the road and what looked like water up ahead of us. It was hard to tell which was water and which was a mirage. As I sat enjoying the journey these mirages kept appearing then disappearing again increasing my fascination.

I discovered today for the first time that a mirage can actually mirror its surroundings. I understand how perfectly still water can reflect its surroundings but a mirage, something that’s not actually there? Amazing!

As you come closer to these mirages disappear so mirages are sensitive to your level of sight. You must be above the inversion layer to see them, the only way I saw these mirages was when I was a long way away from them.

As I thought about sharing this blog I wished I’d taken photos of this phenomenon and I didn’t see them on later days. So why are they there sometimes and sometimes not? And how this phenomena could possibly manifest above dull lifeless bitumen with no innate ability to shine baffled me so I did some research and found that it’s actually to do with air temperature rising. Ground heated by solar radiation can produce an abnormally hot air layer above it.

These are the conditions for mirages seen over a hot road. If I was lost in the desert with no water it would be easy to believe all my dreams had come true if I saw this up ahead of me.

When we need answers for a problem we face we can quickly be fooled by attractive looking mirages waiting to trick us.

Have you ever wondered why is it that those close to us can see we’re making a huge mistake but we believe we’re on the right track? It is possible to be absolutely convinced we know what we’re doing but be headed for a fall.

God tells us that Satan has a mirage, a counterfeit for everything God offers us and he will dangle whatever we want in front of us to distract us away from the truth.

Be careful! Watch out for attacks from the Devil, your great enemy. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for some victim to devour. “1 Peter 5:8”

When disappointments are weighing u down, if we aren’t already aware that God loves us, Jesus died for us and He has the answer for every problem in our life we can be lured by attractive temptations that appear the answer to everything, but taking a wrong direction in search for truth will never satisfy and these temptations will always leave us with increased disappointment when we find out what we thought we were getting wasn’t the real deal.

Satan will do all he can to distract you from the truth. He will appear as an angel of light to lure you away from the truth but he only has power over us if we give him permission. As the scripture says:
And it is no wonder; for even Satan himself is able to take the form of an angel of light. 2 Corinthians 11:14

For a little while he has been given permission to rule this earth and its easy to see that this world sinks further and further into decay with each day. In the Bible it is written:

The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give life in all its fullness. John 10:10

He has nothing to offer you but death. He will, if you let him, have you so convinced that your life is worthless and no-one cares about you any more that you will even see suicide as the best way out of your problems.

But that will never be the end for you because the Bible also says we will all stand before Jesus one day and give account for our lives. Our bodies decay away but our soul lives on forever.

Where we spend eternity is up to us. If your life is less than happy right now, spending eternity in hell with every other person who didn’t accept Jesus won’t solve your problems. There’s only one way to escape and Jesus is His name. He died for you, took every sin you’ve ever committed on Himself to bring freedom from the cure of punishment for you.
