But My Words Will Last Forever!

How could this be? It makes no sense that pages of a book could endure such heat without being scorched or more believably burned up, so how did this Bible stay safe under heat so intense that it became fused to metal without being consumed?

This was found in the rubble at Ground Zero after the 9/11 Attack…

Paper from a Bible, fused to a piece of steel, was found in the debris shortly after 9/11 by a fireman and given to photographer Joel Meyerowitz. In 2010, he gave it to the September 11 Memorial Museum.

On March 30, 2002, a firefighter searching for victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks at the World Trade Center in New York, discovered a burnt Bible fused to a piece of steel. The barely legible top page is open to the Sermon on the Mount from Matthew 5, where Jesus speaks of “an eye for an eye” followed by “resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.”

“Retaliation.”

“Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.”

So many chapters. So many verses. But these were the words — from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, in the Gospel of Matthew — found permanently exposed at Ground Zero after the Sept. 11 attacks. The pages of the Bible in which they were printed had fused to a chunk of steel as the World Trade Center collapsed, to be found only months later.

The artifact was given to the museum by the photographer Joel Meyerowitz, whose book “Aftermath: World Trade Center Archive” is the definitive pictorial chronicle of the months following the attack.

A firefighter found the fragment in March 2002, under the Tully Road, a temporary truck route that covered the last remnants of the south tower. He called out to the photographer, who happened to be nearby.

“This shredded, burned and rubble-covered Bible came to me from the loving hands of a fireman who knew that I was the record keeper of ground zero,” Mr. Meyerowitz said Thursday in an e-mail from Italy, where he now lives.

“My astonishment at seeing the page that the Bible was open to made me realize that the Bible’s message survives throughout time,” he said, “and in every era we interpret its teachings freshly, as the occasion demands.”

When the leaves begin to show, one look tells you that summer is right around the corner. The same here—when you see these things happen, you know God’s kingdom is about here. Don’t brush this off: I’m not just saying this for some future generation, but for this one, too—these things will happen. Sky and earth will wear out; my words won’t wear out.
Jesus promised us: Though all heaven and earth shall pass away, yet my words remain forever true. Luke 21:33

Discovery of this Ground Zero Bible demonstrates that God was available in the midst of the 9/11 devastation and He’s right in the midst of all you’re going through if you invite Him in.

Why didn’t He stop this from happening?
He gave us the right to choose what we will do, wrong or right and our bad choices always effect others, but He has promised to never leave us or forsake us when we put our trust in Him:

“Be strong. Take courage. Don’t be intimidated. Don’t give them a second thought because God, your God, is striding ahead of you. He’s right there with you. He won’t let you down; he won’t leave you.” Deuteronomy 31:6

Don’t be obsessed with getting more material things. Be relaxed with what you have. Since God assured us, “I’ll never let you down, never walk off and leave you,” we can boldly quote,

God is there, ready to help;
I’m fearless no matter what.
Who or what can get to me? Hebrews 13:5

Yes, be bold and strong! Banish fear and doubt! For remember, the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9

Let him have all your worries and cares, for he is always thinking about you and watching everything that concerns you. 1 Peter 5:7

That is why we can say without any doubt or fear, “The Lord is my Helper, and I am not afraid of anything that mere man can do to me.” Hebrews 13:5-6

I’ll be with you as you do this, day after day after day, right up to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:20

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything; tell God your needs, and don’t forget to thank him for his answers. If you do this, you will experience God’s peace, which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand. His peace will keep your thoughts and your hearts quiet and at rest as you trust in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7

Fear not, for I am with you. Do not be dismayed. I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will help you; I will uphold you with my victorious right hand. Isaiah 41:10-13

Pile your troubles on God’s shoulders—he’ll carry your load, he’ll help you out.
He’ll never let good people topple into ruin.
But you, God, will throw the others into a muddy bog,
Cut the lifespan of assassins and traitors in half.
And I trust in you. Psalms 55:22

And we know that all that happens to us is working for our good if we love God and are fitting into his plans. Romans 8:28

That’s the kind of life God wishes for us but its our choice to accept or reject His gift.
