Will Satan be defeated?
The bad news is that Satan is causing havoc and our world becomes more evil each day, but the good news is he’s on a time limit and has no power over me unless I give it to him.
Here’s what the Bible says about the activities of Satan as experienced by Job, a man who lived a prosperous and exemplary life that pleased God.
Job’s first test:
One day the angels came to present themselves before the LORD and Satan also came with them.
The LORD said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Satan answered the LORD, “From roaming through the earth and going back and forth in it.”
Then the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.”
“Does Job fear God for nothing?” Satan replied.
The LORD said to Satan, “Very well, then, everything he has is in your hands, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.” Then Satan went out from the presence of the LORD. Job 1:6-12 NIV
Job’s Second Test:
On another day the angels came to present themselves before the LORD and Satan also came with them to present himself before him.
And the LORD said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Satan answered the LORD, “From roaming through the earth and going back and forth in it.”
Then the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil. And he still maintains his integrity, though you incited me against him to ruin him without any reason.”
“Skin for skin!” Satan replied. "A man will give all he has for his own life.
The LORD said to Satan, “Very well, then, he is in your hands; but you must spare his life.”
So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD and afflicted Job with painful sores from the soles of his feet to the top of his head. Job 2:1-7 NIV
Job’s response to all that Satan threw at him –
Still, I know that God lives – the One who gives me back my life – and eventually he’ll take his stand on earth. Job 19:25
Jesus said to him, "Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’ " Matthew 4:10 NIV
If Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then can his kingdom stand? Matthew 12:26 NIV
Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.” Matthew 16:23 NIV
He (Jesus) was in the desert forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals and angels attended him. Mark 1:13 NIV
So Jesus called them and spoke to them in parables: "How can Satan drive out Satan?
And if Satan opposes himself and is divided, he cannot stand; his end has come. Mark 3:23, 26 NIV

But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. “Get behind me, Satan!” he said. “You do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.” Mark 8:33 NIV
The seventy came back triumphant. “Master, even the demons danced to your tune!”
Jesus said, "I know. I saw Satan fall, a bolt of lightning out of the sky. Luke 10:17-19 MSG
You say I (Jesus) am empowered by the prince of demons. But if Satan is fighting against himself by empowering me to cast out his demons, how can his kingdom survive?. Luke 11:18 MSG
But the leader in charge of the synagogue was indignant that Jesus had healed her on the Sabbath day. “There are six days of the week for working,” he said to the crowd. “Come on those days to be healed, not on the Sabbath.”
But the Lord replied, "You hypocrite! You work on the Sabbath day! Don’t you untie your ox or your donkey from their stalls on the Sabbath and lead them out for water?
Wasn’t it necessary for me, even on the Sabbath day, to free this dear woman from the bondage in which Satan has held her for eighteen years?" Luke 13:16 NIV
The high priests and religion scholars were looking for a way to do away with Jesus but, fearful of the people, they were also looking for a way to cover their tracks.
That’s when Satan entered Judas, the one called Iscariot. He was one of the Twelve.
Leaving the others, he conferred with the high priests and the Temple guards about how he might betray Jesus to them. Luke 22:2-4 MSG
Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to have all of you, to sift you like wheat. But I have pleaded in prayer for you, Simon, that your faith should not fail. Luke 22:31-32 NLT
As soon as the bread was in his hand, Satan entered him. “What you must do,” said Jesus, “do. Do it and get it over with.” John 13:27 MSG
Then Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart? You lied to the Holy Spirit, and you kept some of the money for yourself. Acts 5:1-3 NLT
I am going to send you to the Gentiles, to open their eyes so they may turn from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God. Then they will receive forgiveness for their sins and be given a place among God’s people, who are set apart by faith in me.’ Acts 26:18 NLT
The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Romans 16:20 NIV
I forgive him with Christ’s authority for your benefit, so that Satan will not outsmart us. For we are very familiar with his evil schemes. 2 Corinthians 2:11 NIV
For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, masquerading as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. 2 Corinthians 11:14 NIV
We wanted very much to come, and I, Paul, tried again and again, but Satan prevented us.1 Thessalonians 2:18 NLT
The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders and in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. 2 Thessalonians 2:9 NIV
Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme. 1 Timothy 1:20 NIV
Some have in fact already turned away to follow Satan. 1 Timothy 5:15 NIV
“I know about your suffering and your poverty — but you are rich! I know the slander of those opposing you. They say they are Jews but they really aren’t because theirs is a synagogue of Satan. Revelation 2:8-9 NIV
I know that you live in the city where that great throne of Satan is located and yet you have remained loyal to me. And you refused to deny me even when Antipas, my faithful witness, was martyred among you by Satan’s followers. Revelation 2:13 NLT
The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him. Revelation 12:9 NIV
What will happen in the end?
Satan’s Doom:
Then I saw an angel come down from heaven with the key to the bottomless pit and a heavy chain in his hand.
He seized the dragon — that old serpent, the Devil, Satan — and bound him in chains for a thousand years.
The angel threw him into the bottomless pit, which he then shut and locked so Satan could not deceive the nations anymore until the thousand years were finished. Afterward he would be released again for a little while.
Then I saw thrones, and the people sitting on them had been given the authority to judge. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their testimony about Jesus, for proclaiming the word of God. And I saw the souls of those who had not worshiped the beast or his statue, nor accepted his mark on their forehead or their hands. They came to life again, and they reigned with Christ for a thousand years.
This is the first resurrection:
(The rest of the dead did not come back to life until the thousand years had ended.)
Blessed and holy are those who share in the first resurrection. For them the second death holds no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him a thousand years.
When the thousand years end, Satan will be let out of his prison.
He will go out to deceive the nations from every corner of the earth, which are called Gog and Magog. He will gather them together for battle — a mighty host, as numberless as sand along the shore.
And I saw them as they went up on the broad plain of the earth and surrounded God’s people and the beloved city. But fire from heaven came down on the attacking armies and consumed them.
Then the Devil, who betrayed them, was thrown into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur, joining the beast and the false prophet. There they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.
And I saw a great white throne, and I saw the one who was sitting on it. The earth and sky fled from his presence, but they found no place to hide.
I saw the dead, both great and small, standing before God’s throne. And the books were opened, including the BOOK OF LIFE. And the dead were judged according to the things written in the books, according to what they had done.
The sea gave up the dead in it and death and the grave gave up the dead in them. They were all judged according to their deeds.
And death and the grave were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death — the lake of fire.
And anyone whose name was not found recorded in the Book of Life was thrown into the lake of fire. Revelation 20 NLT
